Yazd has a strong history of being associated with the Zoroastrians (check wikipedia to learn about them...). There is the famous Zoroastrian Fire Temple with a lit fire that was first lit over 1000 years ago.
Also visit the Fort of Naren, predating Islamic time it is Iran's biggest earthen built structure.
Wind tunnels and Islamic architecture and history are also very strong in the town.
