my older sister is 19 and she's applying for an internship in uganda, africa this summer to work on healthcare and with some of the poor people living there. i'm only 16 and i really don't know that much about the current state of uganda but i know about AIDS in africa and all the diseases there. she was saying how she would have to get like 20 shots or something before going..i obviously want her to go but i'm really worried about the diseases and even all the violence that's going on over there. we studied the genocide in rwanda and darfur in school and it's upsetting to even think about but i'm actually disturbed thinking about my older sister being over there..does anyone know much about the safety over there and what's going on?

I just came back from a trip in Uganda (as well as Kenya and Rwanda) in January, and I felt safe the entire time I was there.

Just as you would travelling anywhere in the world, there are certain precautions you need to take such as getting the proper vaccinations, medications & consulting a travel doctor, and finding out about the area(s) that you will visit.

My travel doctor advised taking a well stocked first-aid kit, always use a mosquito net and take precautions to avoid being bitten, among other measures to stay healthy. I cannot advocate talking to a travel doctor enough!

There is corruption there, sure, but the country is much more stable than it used to be. If she goes, she should be sure to take emergency contact details, such as the phone number and address of your country's embassy in Uganda.

Many tour companies from all over the world operate tours to Uganda, and they would not be insured to do this if there were high levels of risk towards their clients. I realize this is different than volunteering, but if she is volunteering with an organization they will give her tips about safety in the immediate area that she will be in, and the country as a whole.

It is important to remember that a lot of what we see in the media is sensationalized, and also that each country is different.

Uganda is full of corruption even years after the evil dictator Idi Amin was in power. Uganda, Sierra Leon, Congo, Liberia, Rwanda and all South Africa is a very dangerous place for any women and you don't hear about everything that goes on over there because of the corruption and cover ups. To these people the fear of rape, dismemberment and death is a everyday part of life.

When Idi Amin started murdering, there's a river in Uganda and you was able to see a dead body float by every 15 seconds for a month this was in the 70's but just the thought

sometimes the answer itself is instigating a question, how do you "avoid being bitten"? prime way is to not go out in the first place, or even cancel your tourism plan all together.

Wow I'd be really scared for any white woman traveling anywhere in Africa. The chances of getting raped or killed are WAY higher. It's like living in detroit or new orleans x1000
