I want to plan a trip to Petra, Jordan.

Of course, I'm not middle-eastern, I have no contacts over there or anyone who has been there, I dont' know the language.

Where do I start?

What I really want to know is more or less how much it would cost leaving from San Francisco, CA.

I second the advice to talk to a travel agent. This kind of question is what they're for.

I don't, however, agree with the idea that you should also visit other countries while you're there. Jordan is quite enough on its own. I could certainly spend three days in Petra and not be bored.

You don't need to speak Arab (but it would be useful to you to be able to read the numbers, especially in shops and at markets). Learn to say hello, goodbye, please, thank you and God willing. People will appreciate that.

The country, especially Petra, is touristic enough so that you don't need contacts. It's not like you're planning an expedition into undiscovered terrain. However, it's very beautiful and really worth the trip.

There's no such thing as crappy weather in Jordan. So you can strike that concern off your list.

It should cost you around a 1500-2000 USD for a round trip from SF to Amman. You could go on Royal Jordanian Direct from LAX, JFK or Ohare and on Delta from JFK.

Budget around $70 per night in a decent hotel (3 stars) and you could eat for around $15 a day.

Transportation is cheap. you should be able to get to Petra for less than $40 in bus and taxi fares. Other sights to visit include the roman city of Jarash, roman ruins in Amman, the dead sea and the desert castles.

Best time to go is April through mid June. It's a desert climate so it gets warm in the day and cool at night.

Language is not an issue. Most people speak english and are welcoming of tourists.

I suggest cotacting a travel agent to make most of your trip. Visit Egypt or Damascus. You could also visit Jerusalem and Beirut. All are beautiful.

You should go to Petra as part of a larger trip to that area. One or two days in Petra is enough.

Try connecting with a trip to Israel or Egypt.

Talk to a Travel Agent or two.

You will never forget Petra !!!!

Call Royal Jordanian airlines...ask about their package deals.

That would be the best way to see what airport would be convenient and that way you may be able to get a group tour of Petra and other places.
